Unsung Sariling Bayani (USB) is a short film competition focused on the theme of lesser-known Filipino heroes. National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Kidlat Tahimik is the leading proponent of this cinematic movement for the youth, aiming to balance the influence of foreign superheroes in the Filipino youth’s mindset with a compelling engagement with the glorious stories of our very own heroes.
With my experience in a prior project of the same nature (Sine Wikain) in 2020, I was tasked to flesh out the final concept, work plan, and pull off everything from ground up.
* All publicity materials were made by the Creatives Unit of FDCP
The competition was launched in April through a press release since it will have a nationwide reach and it was a concept of a national artist.
Since this deals with retelling the stories of actual people, period film entries were expected and this genre would require certain knowledge and skills in filmmaking. Thus, FDCP hosted a series of workshops of 12 key areas of filmmaking with some of the leading filmmakers as mentors.
The Department of Education was also tapped to promote the program to students nationwide.
An opportunity to brainstorm their projects with Kidlat Tahimik himself was also planned.
Cash prizes of up to Php 50,000.00 per category was allotted.
The project ran from April to December 2021, concluding with the USB Online Film Festival at the FDCP Channel and the USB Awards Night.
This became one of our most successful online projects to date, yielding the most numbers in any workshop that we have conducted.
WORKSHOPS:
2,140 highest audience count in a single workshop in FDCP
14,492 total audience count, the highest in any workshop series in FDCP
